The Occitan name of the community is Barbachen. It probably comes from the Latin proper name Barbatius and the Aquitaine suffix -ennum .

The community's nickname is Los brosta-cardons ( German for  those who graze on thistles ).

Toponyms and mentions of barbarians were:

  • Barbepien (1285, census of the nobility of County Bigorre),
  • De Barbapenh (1313, Debita regi Navarre tax list ),
  • Barbapjen (1379, Prokuration Tarbes ),
  • Barba Pien , (1429, Bigorre County Census List),
  • Barbaxen (1760, Larcher, Church Register of Tarbes),
  • Barbachen (1750 and 1793, map by Cassini or Notice Communale ),

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 160 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 40 inhabitants during short recovery phases by the 1990s, before a phase of moderate growth began. that continues today.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Oren
  • Parish Church of Saint-Oren. The ditched ramparts that surround the church are evidence of the site of an earlier count's fortress. The atypical orientation of the church with the apse in the south can be explained by the fact that it is embedded in the fortress. The significant thickness of the foundation of the bell gable reveals the defensive function of the building. The fortress of Barbachen lost its strategic importance in the 14th century in favor of Rabastens-de-Bigorre and Monfaucon. In the 17th century the church was fundamentally redesigned with the elevation of the walls of the nave and the erection of the sacristy and then the construction of a canopy to protect the entrance portal from bad weather. In the interior of the church, neo-Gothic paintings from the late 19th century, an altar with a tabernacle from the end of the 17th century and a baptistery and pulpit from the 18th century are worth mentioning .
