history
Nouilhan is one of the oldest parishes in the Adour Valley. Old texts from the Larreule monastery mention it in 1015 under the name Nouelhano . The settlement of the municipality in the Gallo-Roman period is evidenced by the remains of a villa from the second or third century. In the Middle Ages there was a moth under the name Tuco near the Canal du Moulin. In 1256 the municipality formed the northern limit of the Bigorre. In 1313 Nouilhan was dependent on the Seigneur of Lafitole and in 1429 on the Seigneur of Andoins . In 1717 the Count of Pujo lived in the parish. The parish was for a long time determined by the neighboring monasteries of Larreule and Saint-Lézer . On March 24 and 25, 1814, a battle took place between the troops of the French marechal Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu Soult and the advancing Allied army under the command of Arthur Wellesleys , who later became the Duke of Wellington .
Toponymy
The Occitan name of the community is Nolhan. It comes from the Latin or Gallo-Roman proper name Nobilis or Novellius and the suffix -anum ("Landgut des Nobilis" or "Landgut des Novellius").
The nickname of the inhabitants of the municipality is Los graulhassèrs ( German the eaters or breeders of frogs ) due to the frequent floods of the Échez.
