Orieux is a French commune with 115 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of Tournay ).

The inhabitants are called Oroix .

Orieux is about 18 kilometers east of Tarbes in the historic Bigorre county .

Orieux is surrounded by the six neighboring municipalities:

Orieux is located in the catchment areas of the Adour and Garonne rivers .

Tributaries of the Arros cross the territory of the municipality:

  • the allier ,
  • the bouès and
  • the Chella, which rises in Orieux.

The Lizon, a tributary of the Baïse , forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Bonnefont to the east. The river will be dammed into a reservoir in the areas of the two communities.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Aurius. Its origin is unclear.

A nickname of the residents of the community is Los cantaires ( German  the singers ). It can be traced back to the fact that the Oroix sang at the mass in Tournay in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte's coronation . Another nickname is Los sauvatges ( German die Wilden, i.e. the Cagots ).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of 330 by the second half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased to around 110 people by the first decade of the 21st century, before a phase of slight recovery began.
