Lavedan

The Lavedan is a landscape in Gascony , part of the Bigorre in the Hautes-Pyrénées department .

etymology

The name Lavedan is documented as in pago Lavetanense (around 860), Levitanensis vicecomes (around 980), vicecomites Levitanicæ vallis (around 1060), Ramundus de Levitania (1095), homines Baredgie et Levitani (around 1110), A. de Laueda ( 1114), Aramon Garsie de Lavedan (1283), terram de Lavedaa (1285). It consists of the Latin suffix -etan, (-itanus) , which is typical of Iberian peoples, and the root Lau- / Leu-.

geography

The Lavedan lies in the basin of the Gave de Pau above Lourdes , mainly from the valleys of the Gave de Gavarnie , the Gave de Cauterets and the Gave d'Azun . It is connected to the Vallée de Campan (the valley of the Adour ) above the Col du Tourmalet and with the Vallée d'Ossau via the Cirque du Litor (east of the Col d'Aubisque ). The main ridge of the Pyrenees separates it from Aragon .

On the slopes of the Pic du Midi de Bigorre and the Col du Tourmalet , around the town of Barèges-La Mongie , is the largest ski area in the French Pyrenees. The village is named after a type of textile, the barege .

history

The Lavedan consists of seven valleys that formed relatively autonomous units.

  1. The Bat Surguère (or Batsurguère) with the towns of Ségus , Aspin-en-Lavedan , Ossen , Omex , Viger .
  2. The Estrem de Castelloubon with the towns of Juncalas , Geu , Ger , Lugagnan , Saint-Créac (today including Antalos et Justous ), Ousté , Berbérust-Lias , Ourdis-Cotdoussan , Germs-sur-l'Oussouet , Cheust , Gazost and Ourdon .
  3. The Estrem de Salles with Argelès (formerly Ourout and Vieuzac , since 1897 Argelès-Gazost), Ayzac-Ost , Agos-Vidalos , Ouzous , Salles , Sère-en-Lavedan and Gez .
  4. The Val d'Azun with the towns of Arrens , Marsous , Aucun , Gaillagos , Arcizans-Dessus , Arras , Sireix , Bun , Estaing , Arbéost , Ferrières (including Hougarou ).
  5. The Dabant-Aïgue (or Dabantaygue) with the municipalities of Préchac , Boô-Silhen (including Asmets ), Saint-Pastous (including Senta-Maria ), Ayros-Arbouix , Vier-Bordes , Artalens-Souin , Beaucens , Villelongue (including Ortiac ) and Saint-Orens .
  6. The Arribère de Sent-Sabĩ or Rivière de Saint-Savin with the towns of Saint-Savin , Lau-Balagnas , Adast , Pierrefitte-Nestalas , Soulom , Uz , Cauterets and Arcizans-Avant .
  7. The Vallée de Barège called Pays Toy (small country) with Luz-Saint-Sauveur , Sassis , Sazos , Grust , Saligos , Chèze (Hautes-Pyrénées) Chèze , Viscos , Vizos , Esquièze-Sère , Esterre , Viella , Betpouey , Barèges , Sers , Viey , Saint-Martin , Gèdre and Gavarnie .

From the 10th to the 18th century there was a vice-county Lavedan, which a Count of Bigorre had established for one of his sons. However, this only included the first five units.
