Ger is a French commune with 156 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Argelès-Gazost arrondissement and the Lourdes-2 canton (until 2015: Lourdes-Est canton ).

The inhabitants are called Gérois and Géroises .

Ger is located about five kilometers south of Lourdes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic county of Bigorre .

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of around 225 in the second half of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to a low of around 115, before a period of growth, with brief recovery periods until the 1960s , which has shown strong growth, especially at the turn of the millennium, but has recently shown a certain stagnation.

Personalities

René Sylvain Edouard Billères, born on August 29, 1910 in Ger, died on October 2, 2004 in Lourdes, was a French politician. During the Second World War he was captured as an officer and held in German officers' camps. He was from 1946 to 1958 a member of the département in the National Assembly and from June 22, 1956 to May 14, 1958 Minister of Education, Youth and Sport. From September 22, 1974 to October 2, 1983 he was a member of the French Senate .
