Gèdre ( Gaskognisch Gèdra ) is a commune déléguée in the French commune Gavarnie-Gèdre with 230 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region .
location
Gèdre is located in the south of the Hautes-Pyrénées department, around 50 km (as the crow flies) south of Tarbes . The place is in the Pyrenees National Park . It is part of the Lavedan region and its sub-region Vallée de Barège . The highest point of the Commune déléguée is the peak of the Pic Long (3194 m. Above sea level) on the eastern border of the Commune déléguée. The mountain formations Cirque d'Estaubé and Cirque de Troumouse form the natural border with Spain. The Lac des Gloriettes reservoir also belongs to the Commune déléguée .
The Commune déléguée Gèdre includes the villages and hamlets (hameaux) Ayrues, Gèdre, Gèdre-Dessus, Héas, Pragnères and Saussa, as well as numerous individual farms.
history
The municipality of Gèdre was created on August 5, 1842 from parts of the previous municipality of Luz-Saint-Sauveur . On January 1, 2016, it merged with Gavarnie to form the Commune nouvelle Gavarnie-Gèdre. It belonged to the Argelès-Gazost arrondissement and the canton of La Vallée des Gaves .

In the 19th century the place had over 1000 inhabitants at times. The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the remoteness led to a continuous decline in the number of inhabitants to the lows of recent times.
