Bernac-Debat is a French commune with 683 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Moyen-Adour (until 2015: canton of Séméac ).

The inhabitants are called Bernacais and Bernacaises .

Bernac-Debat is about eight kilometers southeast of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic county of Bigorre .

Bernac-Debat lies in the catchment area of the Adour River , which flows from south to north on the border with the neighboring municipalities of Momères and Saint-Martin to the west. The Canal d'Alaric, which flows into the Adour, and its tributaries, the Ruisseau de Layet and the Echéoux, also cross the territory of the commune.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Bernac Devath. The first part of the name comes from a Gallo-Roman proper name Brennus , a Germanic proper name Bernus or a Gallic proper name Vernus or Verno and the suffix -acum ("Landgut des Brennus / Bernus / Vernus / Verno"). The second part of the name is a derivative of the Gascognischen devath ("north" in relation to Bernac-Dessus).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 790 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 410 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1960s, before a growth phase that began continues today.

Bernac-Debat can be reached via Routes départementales 8, 119 and 508.

The Morcenx – Bagnères-de-Bigorre railway crosses the municipality. Today, however, it is only used for freight transport.
