geography
Antin is located about 21 kilometers northeast of Tarbes in the historic county of Bigorre on the northern edge of the department.
Antin is surrounded by the seven neighboring communities:
Bouilh-Devant | Mazerolles | Bernadets debate |
Trouley-Labarthe | Lapeyre | |
Osmets | Lubret-Saint-Luc |
Antin lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .
The Bouès , a tributary of the Arros , marks the border with the neighboring municipalities of Bernadets-Debat and Lapeyre to the east. Its tributaries cross the territory of the municipality:
- the Sarraillé,
- the milieu that rises in Antin and is dammed into a lake there, and
- the Ruisseau d'Antin, which rises in Antin and runs on the border with the northern neighboring municipality of Mazerolles.
Antin is also irrigated by the Ribère, a tributary of the Lurus.
history
The discovery of objects from the prehistory prove an early settlement of the area. In 1958, fragments of a third century treasury were discovered in a wall.
Antin belonged to the county of Bigorre and became the seat of a baronate , which was first mentioned in 1060 (according to other sources 1110). This was owned by the Pardaillan family , who, however, no longer took up residence in the village before 1400. The Field Marshal Antoine Arnaud de Pardaillan was in 1615 for Marquis raised. His great-grandson, Louis Antoine de Pardaillan de Gondrin , was appointed Duke of Antin and Peer of France in 1711 because of his military services . This rule united various baronies and territories and existed until 1757. In 1790 the place came to the canton of Trie of the Hautes-Pyrénées department.
Toponymy
The Occitan name of the community is also called Antin. There are many theories about its origin. It probably comes from the proper name Antinus , which in turn has its origin in ante and the suffix -inus . Ante is a name in Bigorre during the Middle Ages . Or it is derived directly from Latin Antinius , Romansh: Antenius ., The community's nicknames are Los tistalhaires , Los tisteraires or Los tistalhères ( German for basket weavers ) and Los hèrra-lèbes ( German for those who bait rabbits ).
Toponyms and mentions of Antin were:
- Antii and Anti (around 1110, Copial Book of the County of Bigorre),

Population development
In 1695 the community had 31 fireplaces. When records began at the end of the 18th century, the population had a peak of around 510. In the following period, the size of the community decreased, especially at the beginning of the 20th century and after the end of the First World War with short recovery periods, a trend that continues to this day.
