The Canal d'Alaric, which flows into the Adour, branches off at the border to the neighboring municipality of Montfaucon from the Estéous , which also flows into the Adour and runs on the border with Montfaucon. The Ruisseau de Larcis, a tributary of the Canal d'Alaric, crosses the territory of the municipality together with its tributary, the Ruisseau de la Garnère. Ansost is also irrigated by the Ruisseau de Larribet, a tributary of the Estéous.
history
At the beginning of the 15th century, the village was abandoned by its residents. In 1600 it was owned by Jean de Montesquiou, landlord of Artagnan . An alder forest that has now disappeared was used by the inhabitants of the village in earlier times to produce charcoal . Between 1812 and 1978, the proportion of arable land in the municipality was increased at the expense of vineyards and forest.
Toponymy
The Occitan name of the community is Ansòst. There are many theories about its origin. It probably comes from a proper name Anso and the Aquitaine suffix -ost . The nickname of the community is Eths gravacós ( German the moors ), a reference to the geographical location on the banks of the Estéous in a flat valley with a water-resistant subsoil.

Parish Church de la Nativité-de-la-Sainte-Vierge
The church , consecrated to the Virgin Mary , with its flat apse replaced a simple previous building from the 15th century. In the 18th century a sacristy was added to the east and the walls and windows raised, as can be seen on the southern wall. In the 19th century the bell tower was added to an earlier bell gable , the supporting pillars of which can still be seen. At the same time a chapel was built on the north side , which has no connection to the nave .
The church contains many items of equipment that have been inscribed as Monument historique since December 17, 1986 :
- the entirety of the wood paneling from the 18th and 19th centuries: the wall cladding, the pulpit , the cladding of the holy water basin , the confessional , the choir screen , the choir benches and the seat of the celebrant ,
- the Romanesque stone altar table from the 10th and 12th centuries,
- the tabernacle made of painted and gilded wood with five statuettes from the 18th century and
