Pouyastruc is a French commune with 675 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region in the Pre- Pyrenees . It belongs to the canton of Les Coteaux .
geography
Pouyastruc is located between Lizos in the southwest and Castelvieilh in the northeast, 3.3 kilometers northwest of Boulin and 8 kilometers northeast of the city of Tarbes in the valley of the Estéous river in the Bigorre .
history
A nickname of Pouyastruc is Toupiès (" pottery ") because the place was an important pottery center until the 19th century. The other nickname of the village, Los Escudelèrs ("bowl maker "), refers to the manufacture of pottery.
In 1793, during the French Revolution , Pouyastruc received the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government. In 1803 it became the capital of the canton and replaced Aubarède .

Pouyastruc had the most inhabitants in 1836 and 1851, after which the population sank to 294 by 1962. Since then the community has grown again.
economy
Until the phylloxera appeared in the 19th century, Pouyastruc was a good wine-growing region . Today there is little viticulture still practiced there . Important branches of industry are the timber industry , arable farming and the breeding of domestic pigs and domestic cattle . There is a sawmill on site.
