Bonnefont is a French commune with 339 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Les Coteaux (until 2015: canton of Trie-sur-Baïse ).

The inhabitants are called Bonnefontois and Bonnefontoises .

Bonnefont is located about 22 kilometers east of Tarbes in the historic county of Bigorre .

Bonnefont is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River on the left bank of the Baïse , one of its tributaries.

The Ruisseau de Mézères and the Lizon, tributaries of the Baïse, cross the territory of the commune, as does the Ruisseau du Léoup, a tributary of the Baïsole .

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Bonahont. It has its origin in the Gascognischen bona hont ( German  good source ).

The nickname of the community residents is Los putanèrs ( German  the Schürzenjäger ).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of 1,150 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community decreased to around 315 inhabitants by the end of the 20th century with short recovery phases, before a short growth phase raised it to a level of around 350 inhabitants, which is still held today.

Attractions

Saint-Félix church in Bonnefont

It is located east of the site of a previous castle. The building looks typical of the 19th century, but dates from the 16th century and replaced a previous building. It contains a group of sculptures from the 18th century made of gilded wood depicting the Pietà , which has been inscribed as a Monument historique since December 11, 1981 .

The church, built in the 19th century, is dedicated to the birth of Mary. However, a parish church is already entered on Cassini's map.
