Ugnouas ( Occitan : Unhoans ) is a French commune with 79 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region (until 2015 Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and to the Adour Madiran community association founded in 2015 . The residents call themselves Ugnouasais .
geography
Ugnouas is on the river Adour in the middle of the historic landscape of Gascony and northwest of the plateau of Lannemezan , about twelve kilometers north of Tarbes and 40 kilometers east of Pau . The unusually small community with 159 hectares stretches from the right bank of the Adour over a fertile arable landscape about 1500 m to the east. A small strip of alluvial forest on the left bank of the Adour also belongs to the municipality. The terrain in the municipality is almost flat at about 240 meters above sea level. Ugnouas is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bazillac in the north, Tostat in the east and south and Villenave-près-Marsac in the west.
Place name
The village first appears in a document as de Hunhuas in 1313 . The place name developed from de Unhoannio (Latin, 1342), de Unhoanis , (1379), Vnhoas, Unhoas and Hunhoas (1429) and Ugnoas (1760) to the Ugnouas, which has been used in a municipal register since 1769 and is still in use today .
