Fontrailles is a French commune with 151 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Les Coteaux (until 2015: canton of Trie-sur-Baïse ).

The inhabitants are called Fontraillais and Fontraillaises .

Fontrailles is located about 26 kilometers northeast of Tarbes in the historic county of Bigorre on the northern border with the neighboring Gers department .

Population development

After records began, the number of inhabitants rose to highs of around 505 each in the middle of the 19th century and again in the second half of the same century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased with short recovery phases until the second decade of the 21st century 140 inhabitants.

Personalities

Louis d'Astarac de Fontrailles, born around 1605 in Gascony , died on July 15, 1677, was Margrave of Marestang and Viscount of Fontrailles. He participated in the Cinq Mars conspiracy against Cardinal Richelieu in 1642, in the Cabale des Importants in 1643 against Jules Mazarin and later in the Fronde . He then retired to his fiefdom and wrote his memoirs, which in particular illuminate his role in the Cinq Mars conspiracy and appeared in 1663.
