history

In the Middle Ages, Maumus and Sarraguzan lay within the Kastlanei Moncassin of the County of Astarac in the historic Gascony landscape and shared their fate. The parishes belonged to the Mirande district from 1793 to 1801. The municipalities have been assigned to the Arrondissement of Mirande since 1801 and belonged to the canton of Miélan from 1793 to 2015 . In 1823 the municipalities of Maumus (1821: 201 inhabitants) and Sarraguzan (1821: 203 inhabitants) united to form today's municipality.

Population development

The population development is typical for a French rural community. The developments between 1793 and 1851 with strong growth and the first wave of emigration up to 1872 are normal. This was followed by a short growth phase - followed by a second wave of emigration from 1886. Today the population is at an all-time low.
