Orbessan ( Gaskognisch same name) is a French commune with 288 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitania region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande . Its inhabitants are called Orbessannais / Orbessannaises .

geography

Orbessan is located around 12 kilometers south-southeast of the city Auch in the south of the Gers department. The Gers crosses Orbessan from south to north. The community consists of the village of Orbessan, several hamlets and individual farms. In terms of traffic, the community is on the D929. The N21 also runs just a few kilometers further west.

history

The discovery of the remains of a Roman villa confirms early settlement. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Astarac, which was part of the province of Gascony. The community belonged to the District of Auch from 1793 to 1801. Orbessan was also part of the canton of Seissan from 1793 to 1801. From 1801 to 1973 it was in the Canton of Auch-Sud. Then from 1973 to 2015 within the canton of Auch-Sud-Est-Seissan . The municipality has been assigned to the arrondissement Auch since 1801.
