Viella ( Gascon : viela) is a French municipality with 511 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Okzitanien ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande .

geography

Viella is located around 15 kilometers southeast of the small town of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the west of the Gers department on the border with the Hautes-Pyrénées and Pyrénées-Atlantiques departments . It belongs to the Côtes de Saint-Mont wine region . The most important bodies of water are the Larcis and Saget rivers , a number of streams and some reservoirs and small ponds. The most important supra-regional transport connection is the A65 autoroute (part of Europastraße 7 ), a few kilometers west of the municipality . Riscle is the nearest bus stop (bus line 940 Aire-sur-l'Adour - Tarbes).

Viella is surrounded by the neighboring communities Labarthète and Saint-Mont in the north, Riscle in the northeast, Maumusson-Laguian in the east, Saint-Lanne (in the Hautes-Pyrénées department) in the southeast, Aydie and Aubous (both in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department) in the south , Portet (in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department) in the southwest, Verlus in the west and Aurensan in the northwest.

history

The municipality is historically located within Gascony and belongs to the Bas-Armagnac region . From 1793 to 1801 Viella belonged to the district of Nogaro, from 1793-1801 and from 1802 to 2015 to the canton Riscle (1801-1802 to the canton of Barcelonne).
