Miélan is a French commune with 1,139 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande and the canton of Mirande-Astarac and was the chief town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Miélan until 2015 . The inhabitants are called Miélanaises .

Miélan is located about 33 kilometers southwest of Auch on the Bouès River and Lac de Miélan and on the N21 national road .

history

According to the discovery of sarcophagi, the area seems to have existed even before the bastide was founded in 1284 by Philip III. or his Seneschal Eustache de Beaumarchès to have been settled under the name La Gleysa . When choosing the name of the bastide, one leaned on the French name of Milan ( Milan ). Destroyed in the Hundred Years War from 1368–1370 , the village was rebuilt under Charles V of France .

On August 1, 1922, two pilgrims on their way to Lourdes collided near Miélan . 40 people died.
