Saint-Jean-le-Comtal ( gaskognisch Sent Joan lo Comdau ) is a French commune with 411 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande . Its inhabitants call themselves Saint Jeannais / Saint Jeannaises .
geography
Saint-Jean-le-Comtal is located on a slope around 9 kilometers southwest of the city Auch in the south of the Gers department. The river Sousson crosses the east of the parish and in parts forms the eastern parish boundary. The municipality consists of the village of Saint-Jean-le-Comtal, several hamlets and numerous individual farms. In terms of traffic, the community is less than 1 kilometer west of the N21 .
history
A first fortress with wooden palisades was built in the time of Louis the Pious in the 9th century. Around 1050, on the orders of Count Guillaume von Astarac, the fortress was restored and given stone walls. This fortress was destroyed in the Wars of Religion in the 16th century. In the Middle Ages, the place was within the county of Astarac, which was part of the province of Gascony. The community belonged to the District of Auch from 1793 to 1801. In addition, Saint-Jean-le-Comtal was part of the canton of Barran from 1793 to 1801. From 1801 to 1973 it was in the Canton of Auch-Sud. Then from 1973 to 2015 within the canton of Auch-Sud-Ouest . The municipality has been assigned to the arrondissement Auch since 1801. In 1821 the previous municipality of Arbechan (1821: 90 inhabitants) came to Saint-Jean-le-Comtal.
