Verlus ( Gaskognisch : Verlush) is a French commune with 105 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande .
geography
Verlus is located around 12 kilometers southeast of the small town of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the west of the Gers department on the border with the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department . It belongs to the Côtes de Saint-Mont wine region . The main bodies of water are the Larcis and Lées rivers and some small ponds. The most important supra-regional transport connection is the A65 autoroute (part of Europastraße 7 ), a few kilometers west of the municipality . Saint-Agnet and Sarron are the closest bus stops (bus route 22 Mont-de-Marsan - Aire-sur-l'Adour - Pau).
Verlus is surrounded by the neighboring communities Aurensan and Viella in the northeast, Portet (in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department) in the southeast, Moncla (in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department) in the southwest and Projan in the west.
history
The place has been inhabited since Roman times at the latest. This is evidenced by the excavated remains of a Roman bath. The municipality is historically located within Gascony and belongs to the Bas-Armagnac region . From 1793 to 1801 Verlus belonged to the Nogaro district, from 1793 to 1802 to the canton of Barcelonne and from 1802 to 2015 to the canton of Riscle .
