Saint-Blancard ( Gascon : Sent-Blancat) is a French municipality with 341 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Occitania (2015 Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande and the municipal association Val de Gers . The residents call themselves Saint-Blancardais / Saint-Blancardaises .

geography

Saint-Blancard is located around 27 kilometers southeast of Mirande and 34 kilometers south-southeast of Auch in the very south of the Gers department on the border with the Haute-Garonne department . The community consists of hamlets, numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. In the east, the municipality has a share of the Lac de la Gimone . The Gimone forms the eastern boundary of the municipality.

Neighboring communities are Aussos in the north-west and north, Sarcos in the north, Nénigan (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the north-east, Péguilhan (in the Haute-Garonne department) in the east and south-east, Lalanne-Arqué in the south, Manent-Montané in the south-west and Cabas- Loumassès to the west.

history

The discovery of two statues from the Gallo-Roman period prove an early settlement. During excavations, the remains of a church from the 11th century came to light. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Blancard was in the Kastlanei Villefranche within the county of Astarac in the historic Gascon region and shared its fate. From 1793 to 1801, Saint-Blancard belonged to the Canton of Mondastarac and the District of Mirande. Since 1801, Saint-Blancard has been assigned to the Arrondissement of Mirande and belonged to the canton of Masseube from 1801 to 2015 . The community was called Saint-Pancrace in the Middle Ages .
