Vergoignan ( Gascon : Vergonhan) is a French municipality with 299 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Okzitanien ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande and to the community association Communauté de communes d'Aire-sur-l'Adour .
geography
Vergoignan is located around 6 kilometers northeast of the small town of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the west of the Gers department. It belongs to the Côtes de Saint-Mont wine region . The main bodies of water are the Le Turré and Vergoignan creeks and several ponds. The most important supra-regional transport connection is the A65 autoroute (part of Europastraße 7 ), a few kilometers west of the municipality . The nearest train station is in Aire-sur-l'Adour.
Vergoignan is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Le Houga in the north, Luppé-Violles in the east, Arblade-le-Bas in the southeast, Barcelonne-du-Gers in the southwest and Aire-sur-l'Adour in the northwest.
history
The municipality is historically located within Gascony . The name of the municipality was Veracumdius in Gallo-Roman times . The parish is mentioned for the first time in the 7th century and belonged to the Duchy of Corneillan. In the Middle Ages it formed its own feudal lordship in the area of the Dukes of Armagnac. From 1793 to 1801 Vergoignan belonged to the district of Nogaro and the canton of Barcelonne. Since then to the Arrondissement of Mirande and from 1802 to 2015 to the Canton of Riscle .
