geography

Moncorneil-Grazan is located around 21 kilometers south-east of Mirande and 22 kilometers south-south-east of Auch in the south of the Gers department. The community consists of hamlets, numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. The Arrats river crosses the municipality in a northerly direction and in parts forms the municipal boundary.

Neighboring communities are Tachoires in the north, Betcave-Aguin in the north-east, east and south-east, Bellegarde in the south, south-west and west and Pouy-Loubrin in the north-west. Part of the municipality of Bellegarde is an exclave in the municipality of Moncorneil-Grazan.

history

Remains of a villa from the Gallo-Roman period are evidence of early settlement. In the Middle Ages, the communities of Grazan, Moncorneil-Derrière and Moncorneil-Devant were located within the Kastlanei Villefranche of the County of Astarac in the historic Gascon region and shared their fate. All three municipalities at that time belonged to the district of Auch and the canton of Seissan from 1793 to 1801. Since 1801, all three former parishes belonged to the Arrondissement Mirande. Moncorneil-Grazan and its predecessor communities belonged to the canton of Saramon from 1801 to 2015 . In 1821 the municipalities of Grazan (1821: 109 inhabitants), Moncorneil-Derrière (1821: 163 inhabitants) and Moncorneil-Devant (1821: 110 inhabitants) merged to form today's municipality.

Population development

The population development is typical for a French rural community. The developments between 1793 and 1821 with strong growth and the wave of emigration that continued from 1851 to 1990 are normal. The situation between 1831 and 1851, in which the population neither increased nor decreased, and the strong growth since 1990 is atypical.
