Sansan fossil site
Sansan is best known for its fossil deposit, in which Édouard Armand Lartet discovered the pine of Pliopithecus antiquus from the Miocene in 1837 . This discovery provided evidence for the first time that primates lived in Central Europe. A large part of the fossils of mastodons (including trilophodons ), rhinos, predators, birds (including Colius palustris and Miocorvus larteti ), reptiles and molluscs that were subsequently unearthed also come from the marl rock deposits of the Miocene. Lartet wrote a book about the fossilized vertebrate fauna of Sansan in 1851.
