Laguian-Mazous is a French commune with 241 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande and the canton of Mirande-Astarac (until 2015: canton of Miélan ).
The inhabitants are called Laguianais and Laguianaises .
geography
Laguian-Mazous is located about 16 kilometers southwest of Mirande in the historic province of Armagnac on the southern edge of the department.

Waters
Laguian-Mazous lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .
The Laüs , a tributary of the Bouès , has its source in Laguian-Mazous. The Ruisseau de Rieuzan, another tributary of the Bouès, flows along the southern border with the neighboring municipality of Estampes. Laguian-Mazous is also irrigated by the Ruisseau du Besc, a tributary of the Lurus.
history
In 1822 the former community Mazous was incorporated. Since 1888 the name of the municipality has been Laguian-Mazous.
In earlier times there was a railway line between Auch and Tarbes . On August 1, 1922 around 4:30 a.m., an accident with 33 dead and 32 injured occurred on the territory of the municipality, when the front of two passenger trains with pilgrims traveling one behind the other could no longer cope with an incline on the way to Lourdes and its brakes failed he rolled backwards and hit the rear train at high speed.
Population development
After records began, the population rose to a high of around 560 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to its lowest level of around 215 inhabitants by the 1970s, with intermittent recovery phases. A growth phase set in until the turn of the millennium, when the number of inhabitants rose to around 305. As a result, there was stagnation that continues to this day.

Laguian-Mazous can be reached via route départementales 3, 146 and 517 as well as via route nationale 21 .
The commune is also connected to other communes in the department and the neighboring department of Hautes-Pyrénées via a line from the Lignes intermodales d'Occitanie bus network from Auch to Tarbes .
