Saint-Mont ( Gascon : Sent Mont) is a French commune with 320 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mirande .
geography
Saint-Mont is located around 11 kilometers southeast of the small town of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the west of the Gers department. It belongs to the Côtes de Saint-Mont wine region . The main bodies of water are the Adour and Saget rivers , the Barry , Bergons and Pesqué streams , and several reservoirs and ponds. The most important supra-regional transport connection is the A65 autoroute (part of Europastraße 7 ), a few kilometers west of the municipality . The closest public transport stops are the bus stops in Saint-Germé and Riscle on the 940 Aire-sur-l'Adour-Tarbes bus line.
Saint-Mont is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Germé in the north, Tarsac in the northeast, Riscle in the east, Viella in the south, Labarthète in the southwest and Corneillan in the northwest.
history
The municipality is historically located within Gascony . The place was already inhabited in Celtic and Roman times. In 1050, Bernard Tumapaler donated the land of the former oppidum to the Order of Cluny, who built a monastery on it. The monastery existed until the French Revolution. From 1793 to 1801, Saint-Mont was part of the Nogaro district and, until 2015, the Riscle canton . In 1822 the municipality of Cadillon (1821: 88 inhabitants) was incorporated.
