Barran is a French commune in the Gers department in the Occitanie region (previously Midi-Pyrénées ), 15 kilometers from Auch , the administrative center of the department.
geography
The municipality of Barran is located on the banks of the Baïse on the old national road 15 kilometers southwest of Auch .
history
Barran was founded as a bastide at the end of the 13th century. Its unusually twisted church tower makes the village famous in the area. In the Middle Ages the community housed a small Jewish community.
Population development
Before the massive wave of emigration to the cities in the 20th century, Barran had around 2000 inhabitants. After the number of inhabitants had meanwhile decreased to less than 700, it is now 673 (as of January 1, 2017).

Public facilities for basic services such as post office, school, a doctor, and a grocery store, as well as a restaurant and sports facilities can be found in the village.
Attractions
- The church of the Collegiale Saint-Jean-Baptiste dates back to the 12th century, but was rebuilt in 1569.
- Mazères Castle was the summer residence of the Archbishops of Auch. During the First World War , a military hospital for wounded soldiers was set up in the castle.
- The Mazères Bridge over the Baïse River was built in the 16th century.
