Malabat ( Gascon : Malavath) is a French municipality with 114 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Gers in the region Occitania (2015 Midi-Pyrénées ); it belongs to the Arrondissement Mirande and the municipality of Astarac Arros en Gascogne .
geography
Malabat is located around 20 kilometers southwest of Mirande and 24 kilometers northeast of Tarbes in the south of the Gers department. The community consists of hamlets, numerous scattered settlements and individual farmsteads. The Arros crosses the municipality in a northerly direction and in parts forms the western municipal boundary.
Neighboring municipalities are Blousson-Sérian in the north, Troncens in the north-east, Betplan in the south-east and south, Haget in the south-west and west, Beccas in the west and Cazaux-Villecomtal in the north-west and north.
history
In the Middle Ages, the community was in the Kastlanei Moncassin of the county of Astarac in the historic Gascon region and shared its fate. Malabat belonged to the Mirande district and the Villecomtal canton from 1793 to 1801. The municipality has been part of the Mirande arrondissement since 1801 and belonged to the Miélan canton from 1793 to 2015 .
Population development
The population development is typical for a French rural community. The developments between 1793 and 1821 are normal with growth and the first wave of emigration up to 1872. This was followed by a short growth phase, followed by a second wave of emigration from 1886. In 1968 the population was at an all-time low. In the last two decades the population grew again significantly.
