Astarac county

Southwest France (Gascony) in the high Middle Ages.

The southern French region Astarac was in medieval times a county and consisted of the northern part of present-day departments of Hautes-Pyrenees and from the southern part of the Département Gers . The main town of the county was Mirande . In the north it bordered the counties of Fézensac and Armagnac , in the east on Comminges , in the south on the Quatre-Vallées and in the west on Bigorre .

The county came into being after the division of the Duchy of Gascony under the three sons of Duke García des Krummen in 926. While the eldest, Sancho IV , kept most of the duchy, the two younger counties were established. Wilhelm García received Fézensac and Arnaud García received Astarac.
