Centulle I. (Astarac)
Centulle I. (Occitan: Centolh d'Astaragues ; † after 1230) was a count of Astarac . It is believed that he was a son of Countess Beatrix († after 1200) and her first husband Rodrigo Jiménez († 1191). Its name suggests a possible relationship to the Counts of Bigorre or the Vice Counts of Béarn .
Centulle is first mentioned as a count in a document from Berdoues Abbey from 1211. In 1219 he successfully defended the city of Marmande, which belonged to the Count of Toulouse, against the knights of the Albigensian Crusade under Amaury de Montfort . But after these were reinforced by an army of Prince Louis (VIII) of France , Centulle had to give up in June 1219 and was taken prisoner. The crusaders then committed a massacre of the local population, in which around 5,000 people were killed. He spent his captivity in Puylaurens , but was soon released during a prisoner exchange.
In April 1229, Centulle put against King Louis IX. from France the feudal oath, only to pay homage the following year to Count Raimund VII of Toulouse . His will dates from the same period.
Centulle was married to Petronille, a daughter of Count Bernard IV of Comminges and Mary of Montpellier . Her children were among others:
- Centulle II. († 1249), Count of Astarac
- Bernard III († 1291), Count of Astarac
