Histoire générale de Languedoc

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Histoire générale de Languedoc (HGL) is a historical work that deals with the history of Languedoc . It was written in the 18th century by Claude Devic and Joseph Vaissète and reprinted several times in the 19th century. It is outdated in some respects, but remains valuable due to the reproduced original texts, many of which were lost during the French Revolution .

The original edition

The Histoire générale de Languedoc goes back to a proposal made in 1708 by the Archbishop of Narbonne , Charles Le Goux de La Berchère , who, as chairman of the États de Languedoc, wanted a complete history of the province. He turned to the Benedictines of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris, who in 1715 commissioned Claude De Vic and Joseph Vaissète to work in the scattered archives of southern France, but also in Paris. As a result of the project, there are now 131 volumes of documents in the Cabinet des Manuscrits des Bibliothèque nationale de France . De Vic and Vaissète published five volumes from 1730, each consisting of three parts: the historical report, the scientific notes and the original texts as evidence.

New edition

Alexandre Du Mège and Jean-Baptiste Paya re-published the Histoire générale de Languedoc between 1840 and 1846, continuing the work until 1830. However, this output is considered to be buggy and therefore not very reliable.

At the beginning of the 3rd Republic, Édouard Privat commissioned scientists with a second new edition. The structure of the work remained untouched, notes were added and numerous other documents, the Histoire générale continued until 1790, the number of volumes was greatly increased, one last volume (volume 16) included graphic representations. The quality of the research and the edition is undisputed, but this work is out of date because it does not take social, economic and cultural aspects into account.
