Averan is a French commune with 68 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the Canton of Ossun .

The inhabitants are called Averanois and Averanoises .

Averan is located about six kilometers northwest of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic province of Bigorre .

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Averan. It comes from the Latin proper name Avarus together with the suffix -anum , the name for the estate of Avarus.

The community's nickname is Eths escobassèrs ( German for  the broom makers ).

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 180 by the second half of the 19th century. Subsequently, the size of the community decreased to around 45 with brief recovery periods up to the 1960s, before a period of growth began, the most recent one Time stagnates again.
