The canton of Ossun is a French constituency in the Arrondissement of Tarbes in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region ; its main town is Ossun .

geography

The canton is located in the west of the department. In the west it borders on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department , in the north on the canton Bordères-sur-l'Échez , in the northeast on the canton Aureilhan , in the east on the canton Laloubère , in the southeast on the canton Bagnères-de-Bigorre and in the South to the cantons of Lourdes-Ouest and Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre . The communes of Gardères, Luquet and Séron form an exclave of the canton in the area of ​​the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. Its area is between 290 m in Séron and 623 m in Averan above sea ​​level .

history

The canton was established in 1790 and its size changed in 1801. Since then there have been no changes. When the cantons in France were reorganized in 2015, the canton of Ossun was one of the few areas that remained unchanged.

In the first ballot on March 22, 2015, none of the six candidate pairs achieved an absolute majority. In the runoff election on March 29, 2015, the team Georges Astuguevieille / Catherine Villegas (both DVDs) won against Emilie Favaro / Michel Ricaud (both PRG) with a share of the vote of 50.97% (turnout: 58.93%).
