history

At the foot of the former moth north-east of the town center, numerous objects (clay vessels, blocks of wall, amphorae ) from the second and third centuries have been found and prove that there was settlement during the Gallo-Roman period . While retaining the remains of the mound castle, the community developed as a so-called castelnau . A Castelnau ( German  Neuburg , Occitan castèl nòu , in Vulgar Latin castellum novum ) is a village or town that was founded in the Middle Ages near a mound castle . The basic rule of Gerderest, which also involved the community Monassut, was first mentioned in the 11th century, as well as a simultaneously existing lay monastery near the parish church a century later. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 25 households in Gerderest and Monassut were counted and it was noted that the villages belong to the Bailliage of Lembeye . This size, which was significant for the time, certainly led to the fact that the land rule over the community was coveted by numerous noble families. Together with Monassut, Saint-Laurent and Audiracq, Gerderest formed the fifth largest baronate in the Béarn, which was sold together with the lay monastery in 1710 to Jean de Noguès, who retained the title until the French Revolution .

Toponyms and mentions of Gerderest were:

  • Gerderes (1154, deeds of Barcelona ),
  • Gerzerest (12th century, writings from the pilgrims' hostel of Gabas, today part of Laruns ),
  • Gergerest (13th century, fors de Béarn (manuscript from the 14th century)),

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . As with most churches in Vic-Bilh, the original building probably dates back to the late Romanesque period , as evidenced by a small three-pass that came to light during one of the last restorations in the south wall. After the devastation during the Huguenot Wars , the church was rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century. Today's church is in the post-Gothic style with its simple structure of nave with a nave , choir and the side chapel from the 15th century. In the 18th century the bell gable with two bells in arched wall openings and the entrance porch were added. Inside the church, the altarpiece by the artist Claverie from the second half of the 18th century and the antependium , which shows the patron saint of the church, St. Martin, as a Roman legionnaire are worth seeing . Other furnishings in the church date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
