Aast is a French municipality with 181 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Vallées de l'Ousse et du Lagoin (until 2015: canton of Montaner ). The local pronunciation of the place name is [ast], with a heavily nasalized 'a' and a spoken 't' at the end.

Aast is the first French commune in the alphabetical order of place names. The inhabitants are called Aastois .

geography

About 15 scattered houses form the small village on the highlands of Ger , about 27 kilometers east of Pau . Aast is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saubole in the northwest, Ponson-Dessus in the east, Ger in the south and Gardères , an enclave of the Hautes-Pyrénées department , in the west.

Aast lies in the catchment area of ​​the Adour river and is crossed by the Carbouère , a stream that flows into the Louet .

history
