history

Lacadée is located on the former Roman road from Beneharnum ( Lescar ) to Aquae Tarbellicae ( Dax ). Sufficient irrigation by Luy de Béarn and Aubin, a prerequisite for sufficient agriculture, prompted the establishment of a Roman military camp , from which the community developed over the centuries.

It was first mentioned in the deeds of the notaries of Labastide-Villefranche under the name La Cadeye in 1471. Later on, Lacadée was one of the few communities to have its own court. Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted that the parish was a former baronate and belonged to the subdistrict of Saint-Sever in the Landes. Like the neighboring municipality of Labeyrie, Lacadée belonged to the Chalosse, an area of the Landes, until the reorganization of the territories at the beginning of the French Revolution , before the municipality was assigned to the newly formed Basses-Pyrénées department. In 1814 the village was devastated by English troops and their allies when they chased Napoleon Bonaparte's troops in the Béarn.

Population development

After a peak of the population of around 300 in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell to a level of around 110 with short growth phases by the 1960s. Only since the turn of the millennium has the community experienced moderate growth.

Parish Church of Lacadée

The small church is of Romanesque origin from the 12th century and shows architectural elements that are typical of churches in the Landes, but also similarities with places of worship of the Béarn der Gaves. Its long building is equipped with a bell tower above the entrance porch.

In the apse of the church there is an altarpiece made of clear colors , which consists of three parts, which are separated from one another by corrugated columns and pillars . In the middle, the niche above the tabernacle shows a gilded statue as a half-relief , on the side wings a statue as a high relief. In the central upper part, a swarm of angels in a triangular pediment surrounds a representation of Agnus Dei .

The type of painting on the altar , which has the coffin shape typical of the 18th century. imitates a texture of multicolored marble . The bulge in its center is decorated with the representation of the Eye of Providence .

On a pedestal on the wall of the church rests the statue of St. Anthony of Padua , whose veneration was particularly widespread in the 15th and 16th centuries. In this depiction he is holding the baby Jesus in his arms, who is said to have appeared to him one night.
