The name certainly comes from the Latin montem acutum ( German  Spitzer Berg ). The geographical location on a hill between the valleys of the Luy de France and the Ruisseau de la Rance confirms this derivation. The inhabitants are called Montagutois and Montagutoises .

history

In 1958, roof tiles, clay pots and lead pipes were found on the site of an earlier Gallo-Roman camp that was built on an oval mound and was surrounded by ditches. It formed the basis for the construction of a bastide before 1319 by Marguerite de Montcade, Viscountess of Béarn, in response to the bastides founded in the Landes by King Edward I of England . In the census of the Béarn in 1385 29 households were counted in Montagut and it was noted that the place belonged to the Bailliage of Garos . Montagut gradually grew over the centuries and became the seat of a notary's office and the capital of a canton in the 17th century. Until the creation of the Basses Pyrénées department during the French Revolution , Montagut was part of the Chalosse, an area that is now part of the Landes department .

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . It was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style on the oval elevation of the former Gallo-Roman camp. The church was remodeled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The bell tower dates from the 17th century, as do the floor tiles inside the church, in which Basque crosses, also known as lauburu , are punched. The single nave nave is framed by a semicircular apse with two side windows, a side chapel and an entrance porch. A staircase leads from the entrance porch to the gallery inside. Next to the baptismal font you will notice a limestone cabinet that is set into the wall. It dates from the 15th century and is used to store the anointing oil . Many other items of furniture from the 15th to 19th centuries are registered as national cultural assets. The tabernacle and the altarpiece in the choir date from the first half of the 18th century. They are made of gilded wood, typical of furnishings of the time. On the door of the tabernacle is a chalice and a host framed by two angels . Medallions with laurel branches and depictions of Saints Peter on the right and Paul on the left can be seen on both sides . The entire work is completed by the wings of the tabernacle and the altarpiece, in the middle of which there is a painting showing Christ crucified , with Saints Martin and Mary on its sides . The sides of the painting are decorated with a number of statues and high reliefs . On the right the Saints Rochus and Martin can be seen, on the left a Madonna with Baby Jesus and John the Baptist at her side, who present Saint Dominic with a rosary .
  • Manor house built in the 17th century, remodeled in the 18th century. The buttress on the western corner of the house comes from a building from an earlier period and proves that the house was built on the foundations of the earlier fortifications. The main entrance from the 17th century has a triangular lintel on top of which a balustrade is let into the facade. A barn, poultry house and pigsty were added in the 19th century to make farming possible.
