history

The houses have always been relatively scattered in the fertile region, so that the residential buildings, which were grouped around the parish church on a hill, formed the first core of a closed settlement. However, it only developed slowly in the Middle Ages . In the census of the Béarn in 1385 twelve households were counted in Maure and it was noted that the settlement belonged to the Bailliage of the Archpriesthood of Montaner . During this time the landlord placed his seat on the 12th century Motte , called l'oustaü de Maur domenger . From 1612 until the French Revolution , the Lagarde family owned the manor. By decree of the French king, Maure became one of the Baronates of Béarn in 1658 . In addition to Maure, it also included the villages of Samonzet and Serée, which today belong to Bentayou-Sérée. The last baron, François de Lagarde, was a member of the Béarn Estates in 1786 . He had a proverbial lack of modesty: Fièr coum lou barou dé Maouré ( German  pride like the Baron von Maure ).

Toponyms and mentions of Maure were:

  • Maur (1385, census in the Béarn) and
  • Maure (1750, map by Cassini ).

Population development

After a peak of almost 250 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century, the number of inhabitants fell to 90 by the 1960s, before moderate growth began to the current level of around 110 inhabitants.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . The discovery of the remains of a former lay monastery at the foot of the ring wall around the Motte suggests that there was also a simple church there. The current parish church replaced the old church in the 14th or 15th century. The single-aisled nave is in the west with a bell tower with Hood Mold completed, by massive buttresses supported, the east by a pentagonal apse . Like most churches in the Béarn, the parish church of Maure suffered numerous damage during the Huguenot Wars . After it was set on fire in 1569, it was restored in the first half of the 18th century, as evidenced by the dates "1716" on the pillars of the gallery and "1743" on the keystone of the arch above the entrance. During this time the choir was embellished with panels and the new main altar made of gilded wood was erected. In 1761 Baron Samson de Lagarde was buried in the parish church. His grave slab made of gray marble is, like many other pieces of furniture from the 17th to 19th centuries, registered as a national cultural asset.
  • Remains of the medieval castle. It was built in the 12th century on an artificially created mound. This square donjon rested on a round hill about five meters high, surrounded by ditches, the traces of which can still be seen today. The whole thing was protected by a curtain wall that was 2.50 m to 3 m thick and of which some pieces of the wall can be seen today in the southwest of the area. The houses to the northwest of the site obviously show re-uses of the donjon material, carried out during the French Revolution.
