history

The small village is strategically located on a hill. In 1085 it is mentioned that Auriol Centulle, third son of Centulle IV , Vice Count of Béarn, owns the village. An inventory of the French Revolution shows his castle on a heaped mound of earth, of which only a few blocks of masonry still exist today.

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the first mention of Auga in the 11th century under the name Algar in the copial book of the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde according to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn . In the 13th century Augar was listed in the fors de Béarn , a collection of official texts from the Vice-County of Béarn. In 1385 a census in Augar counted 22 households and noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Pau. Further mentions of the place name were Augaa (1437), Augua (1544), Anga on the Carte de Cassini 1750. In 1549 only 10 households were counted at the place. Despite the small size, there were two lay monasteries depending on the Vice Count of Béarn. The abbey of Sussa, called Abescat, belonged to an abbot and Jussa, called Laba, belonged to a liege lord .

Population development

After peaking at 344 residents in the 1830s, the number fell by more than half by the 1920s. Since then it has fluctuated slightly in the range of around 110 to 150.
