history

Since the 13th century, the pottery trade developed in the community and gained increasing importance until the beginning of the 20th century. The craftsmen in Bouillon and in the neighboring village of Garos used a technique that gave the clay the consistency of stoneware . In the middle of the 19th century, a third of the population was engaged in this activity.

In the Béarn census of 1385, 30 households were counted in Bolhoo or Bolhon and it was noted that the municipality is in the Bailliage of Garos.

On the map of Cassini 1750 the municipality is shown in its present form.

Population development

After peaking the number of inhabitants up to the middle of the 19th century with more than 300 inhabitants, the number decreased considerably until it fell below 100 in the 1990s. It has since recovered by more than 50%.

Attractions

  • Church dedicated to Martin of Tours . The Romanesque church of Bouillon is located on a circular terrace , on which a mound castle could have stood. The current building dates from the 17th century, but could have been built on the site of an earlier castle chapel. The three-aisled nave is closed with a semicircular apse . The slate-roofed bell tower was added during renovations in the 18th century . Further extensive alterations and restorations took place in the 18th and 19th centuries. The stained glass windows are the work of the renowned Toulouse glass painter Louis-Victor Gesta in 1927. One of the windows shows Saint Martin, the other Therese von Lisieux .
  • Mansion . It is the result of two construction activities, one in the Middle Ages for the erection of the front part of the building, a second in the 17th century for the rear. Since it is on the same terrace high above the Luy Valley as the church, it can be assumed that the group of buildings emerged from a converted medieval settlement.

Economy and Infrastructure

The residents of Bouillon continue the tradition of pottery and have several workshops. Every autumn a large ceramic market is held together with the neighboring municipality of Garos.
