Sarpourenx is a French municipality with 338 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: canton of Lagor ).

The name is derived from the Gascognischen word sarpoth ( German  field thyme ). The inhabitants are called Sarpourenois and Sarpourenoises .

geography

Sarpourenx is located approx. 40 km northwest of Pau in the historic province of Béarn .

The place is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Biron Neighboring communities Argagnon
Castetner Maslacq

Sarpourenx is located in the catchment area of the Adour River on the left bank of the Gave de Pau . Its tributary, the Ruisseau de Géu Mort, flows through the area of the municipality as does the Arriou de Barran.

history

In the Ancien Régime, the area of today's municipality was divided into five Domenjadures , noble houses exempt from taxes, one of which corresponded to a lay monastery . Yet there was no castle or chateau in Sarpourenx. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 25 households were counted and the village was part of the Bailliage of Larbaig. Centuries later some Domenjadures disappeared or changed their names. The most important noble house is the lay monastery of Moulia. The Malardenx house, however, was converted and enlarged in the 18th century. From then on it was called Beryes and its landlord had the privilege of owning a dovecote .

Toponyms and mentions of Sarpourenx were:

  • Sarporencx (1385, census in the Béarn),
  • Sarporencxs and Sarporenxs (1538 and 1546, reformation de Béarn , manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
  • Sarpourenx (1750, map by Cassini ),
  • Sarpoureux (1793 and 1801, Notice Communale and Bulletin des Lois, respectively ) and
  • Sarpourenx (1863, Dictionnaire topographique du département des Basses-Pyrénées).

Population development

The community reached a peak of its size with around 330 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century. As a result, the number of inhabitants was reduced to 150 with short recovery phases by the 1930s. As a result, a robust growth phase set in, which continues to this day.

Attractions

  • Sarpourenx town hall. Because of its architecture, it is called clouque ( German  chicken ) in the Béarn dialect . The upper part is reminiscent of the body of a chicken, the lower part of its wings, which protect the chicks.
  • School of Sarpourenx. The school building and the teacher's house behind it were built in the 19th century and restored at the same time in 1883. The ceilings of the school building were raised and the windows enlarged. The teacher's house was enlarged in length and width and restored again in 2009. Both buildings correspond to the traditional Béarn architecture with their hipped roofs with a high pitch.
  • House of Beyries. It has been mentioned since 1675 and is now in good condition with its plastered facade. In the 19th century, the new owner had the house remodeled.
  • House Layus. It was built in 1833. Its exposed facade reveals the pebbles with which it was built. The two-story building has a roof covered with flat tiles. The house is lined with farm buildings that obviously date from the same period. These have been increased with building blocks in a truss, i.e. H. the stones lie with their narrow side in the line of the wall. This type of construction is unusual for the region, but quite common in Sarpourenx.
  • House Marlat. It was probably built after the opening of the Route départementale in the late 19th century. It extends parallel to the street and its main facade faces the garden to the east. The western facade, which faces the courtyard of the farm, has no windows. The house, the agricultural outbuildings and the surrounding wall have exposed brickwork made of pebbles. The entrance gate, which leads to the garden and thus to the main house, is equipped with a roof made of wooden slats.
