history

Three partly very old paths contributed to the settlement of Saint-Jammes on the edge of an otherwise less fertile area, a path of transhumance that has existed since early history , a Roman road that connected Lescar with Auch and a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The name of the parish was first mentioned in the scriptures in 1376 but does not appear in the records of the Béarn census in 1385 because Saint-Jammes, like Lahayede, belonged to Morlaàs. The lordship of Lahayede, today a district in the northwest of the parish, only affected half of the parish. It was split into two families, the Laussade family, followed by the Belsunce family in 1615, and the landlords of Higuères. This situation led to rivalry and conflict for many years. In 1806 the municipality of Lahayede joined the municipality of Saint-Jammes.

Toponyms and mentions of Saint-Jammes were:

  • Sent-Jacme (1376, military exhibition , sheet 31),
  • Saint-Jayme (1673, reformation de Béarn , manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
  • Saint James (1750 and 1793, map by Cassini or Notice Communale ),
  • Saint-James (1801, Bulletin des lois ) and
  • Saint-Jammes (1863, Dictionnaire topographique de la France).

Toponyms and mentions of Lahayede were:

  • La Fagede and la Fageda (1535 and around 1544, reformation de Béarn , manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
  • La Hayède and la Hajette (1731 and 1763, respectively, counting from Higuères),
  • Hagede (1750, map by Cassini),
  • La Hagede (1793, Notice Communale ),
  • La Hayede (1801, Bulletin des lois ) and
  • (La) Hagède (1863, Dictionnaire topographique de la France).

Population development

After the beginning of the records, the community reached an initial peak of the population of around 300 in the middle of the 19th century. As a result, the number was reduced to around 160 with short recovery phases by the 1940s. In the following period, strong growth began in the 1970s, which is still ongoing today.

  • Relais de la Patte d'oie inn . The name "zum Gänsefuß" can be traced back to the intersection of four streets. The inn was well-frequented in the 19th century and known for hunting rides organized by Englishmen from Pau, attracted by the climate and the shape and vegetation of the landscape.
  • Mansion. In 1930, a wealthy man from Paris built the manor house called Blanche-Neige ( German  Snow White ) on the property of the former Lahayede family in the middle of a wooded park. Today a center for mentally handicapped children and young people has been set up there.
