history

Fortified camps in both districts show that the local area was settled early and could have been established as early as the Gallo-Roman period.

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the first mention of Aurions in 1227 under the name Ryons in the Bordeaux register according to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn . In 1385, a census in Aurios counted 11 households and noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Lembeye . Another form of the place name in the records was Riontz (1536).

Idernes was given the form Ydernes on the occasion of the 1385 census . Only 3 households were counted and it was also noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Lembeye. Another form of Idernes in the series was Ydernas (1540).

On the Carte de Cassini in 1750 and during the French Revolution in 1801, the places are registered as Aurious and Idernes .

In the Middle Ages, Aurions was divided into two fiefs , one owned by the Viscount of Béarn and one under a local liege lord. The Sarramone Castle, which no longer exists today, was an outward sign of the Idernes fiefdom.

In 1844 the two villages merged to form the municipality of Aurions-Idernes.

Attractions

Church Saint-Pierre
  • The church, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter , was donated to the monastery of Saint-Mont in 1079 by Guillaume Arnaud de Vignoles . Construction began in the 11th century and dragged on until the following century. The Romanesque entrance portal on the south side of this original building has been preserved. It is decorated with acanthus , tendrils and rosettes and has a round Christ monogram on the tympanum . The arches of the round arch are decorated with billettes , rows of small cylinders carved out of the stone. The present church got its appearance mainly after a restoration in the 19th century, after it was most likely damaged during the Huguenot Wars . The interior of the church contains many objects, most of which date from the 19th century and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Sarramone Lafourcade House. At the hamlet of Le Tetour, traces of a 60 m × 40 m area, surrounded by an earthen wall and ditches, prove the existence of a fortified camp in Roman times. The seat of the lords of Sauveméa was built in the same place in the 11th century. In 1553 the property passed to the Baradat family, then at the end of the 18th century through a marriage to the Lafourcade family, who rebuilt the simple building. It is shown on the Carte de Cassini as la Forcade .
