Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . It has architectural features that have been found in churches in Béarn since the 17th century: the elongated structure, the long roof sides, the bell gable with small pent roofs and the entrance on the south side. However, the building materials used do not provide any information about the time of construction. Only the work on window openings at the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century indicate a restoration during this period. Inside there are many items from the 18th and 19th centuries that are registered as national treasures. An example is the late 19th century altar in the church choir . It is made of ceramics and illustrates the scene of the asleep of Mary amid a multitude of columns and ornaments . She is lying on her death bed and the apostles surrounding it seem to be pacing back and forth excitedly. The appearance of a child in the scenery is remarkable, which is seldom seen in these depictions. The tabernacle of the church shows influences from several art movements. The neo-Gothic is shown in its construction as a small building on which a crucifix and four brass candle holders are placed in the middle . The center of the tabernacle stands out as it takes the form of a Gothic portal . Serpent pillars, an ornate tympanum , triangular pediment and pinnacles reflect the neo-Gothic style in the late 19th century. Biblical scenes are depicted on the two side wings, which are painted in preferably pink pastel colors. The Annunciation of the Lord can be seen on the right, the Visitation of the Virgin Mary on the left , a motif in which Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth afterwards. In addition to the Gothic Revival, there are also signs of symbolism , which emerged in the late 19th century.
