history

Casteide-Candau was first mentioned in documents of the Vicomté of Béarn in 1402 , and in 1538 as Castaeda-Candau in a manuscript collection of Béarn. Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted a lay monastery in the parish that was a vassal of the Viscount de Béarn. Some toponyms attest to the fact that for a long time the commune was subordinate to Saint-Sever in what is now the Landes department. On the map of Cassini in 1750, Casteide-Candau is entered in its current name, but in 1780 in documents from Pau as Castéide-Saint-Sever . During the French Revolution in 1793, Casteide-Candau was run as Castede Candau , eight years later it was administered under the current form of name during the French Consulate .

Population development

After provisional highs of over 400 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell by a total of around 60% during short phases of stabilization by the beginning of the 1960s. Since then, the population has stabilized and grown.

Attractions

  • Local church dedicated to John the Baptist . It was built in the Romanesque style in the 11th or 12th century. The frame and the tympanum of the entrance seem to come from an earlier, simple church that stood higher up on the hill in the former center of the village, on the slope of which is today's center of the community. The tympanum is made up of carved figures around a round monogram of Christ . At the top of the circle is a Madonna with the baby Jesus in her arms. Her face is disfigured, possibly as a result of the Huguenot Wars . Three male people frame the figure of Mary, three on writing desks , a fourth person appears to be a soldier. A Maltese cross is chiseled to the right of Mary and a lion on the left edge of the tympanum , a reference to the evangelist Mark . The tympanum above the southern entrance was probably built in the 11th or 12th century. The baptistery of the church has been embellished with three glass windows . A window from 1910 shows John the Baptist with a raised finger and a banner with the inscription "ecce agnus dei" ( German  see, the Lamb of God ). The window is the work of the glass painter Arcençan from Pau, while the other two windows are the work of Mauméjean from Pau. One shows a crowned figure clad in a tunic , wearing lilies and holding a crown of thorns . The other window shows a person with a lily in one hand, and in the other a child Jesus carrying the heart of Jesus . The special feature of the choir is an oculus embedded in the wall with a diameter of about one meter. John the Baptist is represented here, surrounded by Roman soldiers and men in turbans and a veiled woman at his feet.
