Baliracq-Maumusson lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . One of its tributaries, called the Grand Lées here , marks the eastern municipal boundary. One of its tributaries, the Petit Lées , flows through a small part of the southern municipal area before flowing into the "big" Lées. The Gabassot, another tributary of the “great” Lées, flows along the northern municipal boundary.
history
Archaeological finds near the church support the assumption that the settlement of this easily defendable place on a hill above the Léestal was carried out by Roman colonists. Further to the west the remains of a fortification from the Middle Ages came to light. The mound of earth extends to 170 m × 60 m, surrounded by a ditch and a defensive wall in the north and south. The purpose of the complex is unclear, whether it was used to defend a former parish or a lay monastery . It is also not certain whether a camp did not already exist in prehistory at this point .
According to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn , Saint-Félix de Balirac was mentioned in the 10th century. In 1443 the name Balirag appears in the contracts with Carresse . On the map of Cassini 1750, the places are entered as Baliracq and Maumußon .
In 1826 the hamlet of Maumusson was incorporated into Baliracq.
Population development
After peaking at 411 residents in the mid-19th century, the number had dropped to just over a quarter of the maximum by the 1970s. Since then, the numbers have remained without major deviations, up or down.

Attractions
- Parish church dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . A Romanesque church was mentioned as early as 984 and 996 . From the medieval building, only a wall opening with simple cladding from the 11th or 12th century has survived to this day. In the 18th century, the damage caused by the Huguenot Wars was partially repaired. 1819 was aisle and 1891, the steeple added above the entrance, the polygonal spire according to the traditional way for Béarn with slate is covered. In a wall niche in the church tower, the statue of St. Peter looks down on the believers entering. He can be recognized by his book, but the usual attributes, the key of Peter , are missing . The majority of the items inside are registered as national treasures.
- Château de Maumusson. The house, which was built in the 18th century and restored in the 19th century, shows typical features of a noble house in the Béarn. The first thing you notice is the hipped roof , which is covered with flat tiles, called picots in Béarn , and has three towering chimneys. The style of the Vic-Bilh is emphasized by the central window in a front gable. The warm ocher tone of the facade is also characteristic of houses in the region.
- House Castéra. The barn dates from 1614 when the yard was built, which was considerably rebuilt in the 18th century. The walls of the ground floor of the barn, which houses a chicken coop, are made of pebbles. On the upper floor there is a dovecote , a symbol of the nobility in the period before the French Revolution . It is therefore believed that it is the former lay monastery Guoyaguet, which was mentioned in the 17th century by the Baron of Castetpugon . Lay monasteries were non-religious institutions owned by a feudal lord who was responsible for protecting the church.
