Castetpugon lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . Tributaries of the Lées flow through the municipality:

  • the Boulise along with its tributary,
    • the sorbet,
  • the Ruisseau de Lauret and
  • the Lées .

history

The protected location on a hill between the valleys of the two Lées led to a scattered settlement of the region since the Neolithic Age . The remains of three Gallo-Roman villas have been brought to light, the largest of which has an area of 5,000 m².

In the Middle Ages , the place developed from a fortified camp with double sectional walls with a length of 500 to 600 meters and a width of around 100 meters with a castle in the center, which is no longer visible today. The landlord of the place, Bernard-Guillaume de Castetpugon, initiated the creation of a Castelnau around the castle in the 11th century .

Attractions

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption local church
  • Local church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . Like the parsonage belonging to it, it was built in 1875 and 1883 with the help of a donation from Atala Bourdeau d'Audéjos, widow of a medical officer . Together with the rectory, the church is on a steep embankment in the east and surrounded by a moat on the south side, which suggests the remains of a former moth . The floor plan of the single-nave nave is in the shape of a Latin cross . There is also the burial chapel of the Bourdeau d'Aujédos family, in which the donor, her husband and her son are buried. Many of the furnishings date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Castle ruins. A castle was built in the 18th century on the site that had been inhabited since the Neolithic Age and was the former medieval castle. The property had belonged to the Corbères family since 1608 and was inherited by the Angosse family, who kept it until the French Revolution . Étienne de Ger-Angosse had the castle built in 1744 for the Baron de Corbères. In the 19th century the castle was restored and sold in 1881 before it gradually fell into ruin.
