history

The origins of viticulture in Saint-Faust go back to the time when a Gallo-Roman villa was built . Denis Labau (1920–2010), historian from Lescar , mentioned a spring and a villa in his treatise on Lescar Cathedral . A Roman road led from Beneharnum (Lescar) to Illhuro ( Oloron ) past the site of today's municipality of Saint-Faust. It was named Antoninus Street after the Roman emperor Caracalla (188-217) with his official emperor name Marcus Aurel (l) ius Severus Antoninus.

The village of Saint-Faust was first mentioned in the records in the 11th century. It was a stage on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela . Saint-Faust and Laroin formed a parish, they both belonged to the Bailliage of Pau, and in 1385 there were 89 households together. After the conflict in the course of the Reformation ended , Laroin and Monhauba still belonged to Saint-Faust. In 1621 the three settlements swore allegiance to Jean de Salette, Bishop of Lescar and their landlord . In 1778 Monhauba was torn away in a flood of the Gave de Pau, and Laroin gained its independence in the 18th century.

Toponyms and mentions of Saint-Faust were:

  • Saint Faust (11th century, according to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn , p. 246),
  • Sent-Haust (1385, census in the Béarn),
  • Saint Faust (1750 and 1793, map by Cassini and Notice Communale, respectively ) and
  • Saint-Faust (1801, Bulletin des Lois ).

In the period that followed, the number of residents was reduced to around 410 with short recovery phases by the 1960s. Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . The pilgrims on the Way of St. James have visited the original church since the Middle Ages . In 1829 and 1842 there were unsuccessful attempts to move the church in Saint-Faust-le-Bas, a district in the northern part of the municipality, to the center. After the project for a new building by the architect Léon Roussille from Pau had failed in 1844, the architect Gustave Lévy developed the design for a new church in 1863. It was modified in 1864, but carried out by the builder Brusquet in 1866 and 1867. Three stained glass windows with representations of religious personalities were inserted in the apse . They are works by Mauméjean stained glass from Pau. The main facade of today's church is dominated by a porch from the 17th century and the bell gable above , which hides the bell in a round arch and is covered with a tent roof. The nave is of a side chapel completes that Mary , the mother of Jesus Christ , is dedicated. The church has several paintings, including one depicting the crucifixion behind the altar and one depicting the donation of the rosary on the south wall of the long building.
  • Chapel in Saint-Faust-le-Bas. This also served as a stopover for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The entrance dates from the 17th century. The chapel has a bell gable, the facade of which is interrupted by two round arches that provide space for two bells. These are protected on the western side by a cantilever with a canopy. From the balcony on the other side there is a view of the Gave plain and the Lescar hills. The choir of the church houses an altarpiece from the first half of the 17th century, as evidenced by the year "1617" on the gable. It is decorated with a gilded wood tabernacle and a painting depicting the crucifixion. The reredos in the side chapel, dedicated to Mary, is decorated with serpentine columns and has a painting that illustrates the scene in which St. Dominic receives the rosary . Another noteworthy piece of furniture is the multicolored wood pulpit . A spring called Houn de Sen Yan rises near the chapel. In earlier times the faithful gathered at the spring at dawn on St. John's Day, the water of which flows into three stone basins, to wash and drink the water, which was supposed to help against headaches in particular. Until the installation of running water around 1960, the residents regularly supplied themselves with the spring water. Saint-Faust has another spring, Houn de las doulous , whose water is said to have healing properties for the relief of rheumatism .
