Lespielle is a French municipality with 155 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton of Lembeye ).

The inhabitants are called Lespiellois and Lespielloises .

Lespielle is located about 35 kilometers northeast of Pau in the Vic-Bilh region of the historic province of Béarn on the northeastern edge of the department.

history

The current municipality of Lespielle emerged from the merger of the former municipalities of Lespielle, Germenaud and Lannegrasse in 1833. Until August 25, 1978 the new municipality was called Lespielle-Germenaud-Lannegrasse.

The 1385 census in Béarn counted 18 households in Lespielle, including a larger neighborhood where Cagots lived separately from the rest of the residents and had their own source. In the same process ten households were counted in Germenaud and six in Lannegrasse. All three settlements belonged to the Bailliage of the archpriesthood of Lembeye . Lespielle owned a lay monastery, a vassal of the Viscount of Béarn. Germenaud was in the 17th century to the barony applicable, also as a vassal of the Viscount of Bearn. Lannegrasse belonged to the margraviate of Gassion.

Attractions

  • Parish Church of Saint-Denis in Lannegrasse. In all three former parishes there were parish churches before the unification, which were demolished in 1899 and replaced with the construction of the current parish church between 1902 and 1907 according to plans by the architects Pierre Gabarret and Jules-Antoine Noutary. The single nave nave of today's church contains furnishings from the 17th to 20th centuries, which are registered as national cultural assets, and others. a. a 17th century tabernacle and a 19th century Way of the Cross by François Grellet.
  • Manoir de Couloume. The building erected in the 16th century is the former lay monastery of Lespielle. It first belonged to the Labadie family, then through a marriage to the Cassagnère family. In 1570 it was confiscated and in 1734 the country estate was owned by Arnaud de Colomme, who gave it his name. Today's two-storey building consists of a residential wing and an octagonal tower built onto the south facade with an internal wooden staircase. The wrought iron entrance gate from the street to the courtyard dates from the 18th century. When the former parish church of Lespielle was demolished towards the end of the 19th century, the railing of the gallery of the church was reused and integrated into the north facade of the house.
  • Bellegarde watermill . Its construction dates from the 14th century. Part of the residential wing is built directly above the diversion canal, from which the mill takes the energy to drive the water wheel to grind grain or extract oil. Guided tours are organized, accompanied by videos and various exhibits of old tools that explain the history and functioning of the mill. Not far from the building is a covered well, which was restored at the end of the 20th century, which supplied the residents with water before they were connected to the running water supply.
