Abidos is a French municipality with 226 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: canton of Lagor ). The inhabitants are called Abidosiens .

geography

The community is located approximately 27 kilometers northwest of Pau . Abidos is surrounded by the neighboring communities Lacq in the north, Mont in the east, Lagor in the south and Os-Marsillon in the west. Abidos lies in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River and lies at the confluence of the Bayse and the Gave de Pau .

history

The name of the community is of Gallo-Roman origin and means estate of Avitus .

Documents testify to the honor of Raymond Arnaud of Abidos on February 4, 1351 to Gaston Fébus . The lords of Abidos enjoyed the titles and privileges of the nobility, both feudal lords and abbots of the local lay monastery . A flood of the Gave du Pau led to the castle being demolished in the 19th century. The mill over the Bayse and its canal, however, could be preserved.

  • The church, dedicated to Saturninus of Toulouse , was previously attached to a lay monastery. Despite several restoration works at the end of the 20th century, the building has retained its old structure. One of the innovations of the last work is the construction of a narrow, single-storey vestibule at the main entrance. The church is u. a. equipped with a statue of Mary and a statue in honor of Saturninus.
  • The Abidos School was built in 1886 according to plans by the architect Henri d'Arnaudat, who was famous in the region for his reconstructions of sacred buildings.
