The village developed gradually and became an important place of pilgrimage in honor of St. Lupus to heal skin diseases such as B. Soliciting leprosy . The location of the church and the cemetery on a raised rectangular area suggests fortifications in the Middle Ages . In this case there was certainly a castle surrounded by a curtain wall, behind which the population could take shelter in the event of an attack. Until the creation of the department of Basses Pyrénées during the French Revolution Fichous belonged to Chalosse, an area of Gascony today, for the Landes department belongs. Lord of Riuamayou other hand, was a vassal of the Viscount of Bearn. In a census in Béarn in 1385, 14 households were counted in Riuamayou and it was noted that the village belongs to the Bailliage of Garos.
When the new parish was cut in 1792, Fichous was elevated to a parish, with a branch in Larreule and an oratory in Lonçon. The Riumayou community never had its own house of worship.
On March 22, 1842, the parishes of Fichous and Riumayou merged to form today's parish of Fichous-Riumayou.

Attractions
- Parish church of Fichous-Riumayou, dedicated to Gerontius, Bishop of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the 5th century, who Christianized parts of Gascony . It was built in the 12th century on the Romanesque steep, in the 15th century the wall openings for the windows were enlarged to let in more light, and in the 19th century it was completely restored. Due to the various structural changes over the centuries, the masonry appears heterogeneous due to the use of different materials. Two Christ monograms with a diameter of 45 cm adorn the church, one on the southern entrance portal , the other on the front of the altar inside the church. Both inscriptions are carved into a molasse sandstone in the same work . There are two assumptions about where the Christ monogram on the altar was originally located. One says that there was a second portal in the past, another that it would have decorated the present portal together with the other one, one on the lintel , the other in the porch. The altar, tabernacle and a 19th century oil painting as part of the furnishings are registered as national treasures. The latter hangs on a side wall of the nave and shows the crucified Christ , on both sides Mary and the apostle John . Mary has folded her hands, Johannes holds one hand on his heart. Jesus is depicted as still alive with his eyes fixed on heaven. The two wings as part of the picture frame show a relief of plant motifs in red, blue and gold shades and are the only remnants of an altarpiece from the second half of the 18th century.
